Narrative and Response
Description
Adobe Experience Manager is affected by a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability to inject malicious scripts into a web page, potentially gaining elevated access or control over the victim's account or session. Exploitation of this issue requires user interaction in that a victim must visit a maliciously crafted URL or interact with a compromised web page. Scope is changed.

"executiveSummary": "Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) is susceptible to a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability. This security flaw allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to inject malicious client-side scripts into the application's response, which are subsequently executed within the context of the victim's browser session.\nThe vulnerability occurs when user-supplied input is inadequately sanitized or encoded before being reflected back to the user in an HTTP response. If a user is enticed to interact with a crafted URL, the injected payload executes, potentially leading to unauthorized session manipulation, data exfiltration, or the performance of actions on behalf of the authenticated user.\nThe scope of this vulnerability is categorized as 'changed', indicating that the impact of the exploit may extend beyond the security boundaries of the AEM application itself. Exploitation requires user interaction, meaning the attack is dependent on the victim navigating to a malicious link or interacting with compromised content. Organizations utilizing AEM are advised to treat this as a high-priority risk, as successful exploitation facilitates unauthorized access to sensitive user data and administrative control over the compromised session.",
"technicalDetails": "The vulnerability manifests as a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) issue within the Adobe Experience Manager architecture. The root cause is the failure of the application to properly sanitize and validate input parameters before embedding them into the HTTP response body. Because the input is processed and reflected in the browser's Document Object Model (DOM) without sufficient output encoding, the browser interprets the injected data as legitimate executable code.\nThe attack flow begins when an attacker identifies a vulnerable URL parameter or input field within AEM that reflects content to the user interface. The attacker constructs a malicious payload—typically JavaScript—and embeds it into a URL. This payload is designed to execute as soon as the browser parses the response. When the victim interacts with this crafted URL, their browser sends a request to the AEM server. The server processes the request and embeds the attacker's script into the HTML output. The victim's browser, trusting the origin of the server, executes the script in the context of the current session.\nBecause the scope is defined as 'changed', the injected script can operate across different security contexts, potentially allowing the attacker to bypass standard web security controls. Successful execution may allow for the extraction of sensitive session tokens, CSRF tokens, or user cookies, which can then be exfiltrated to an attacker-controlled server. Furthermore, the attacker can leverage the victim’s existing session to perform actions on the application with the victim's current privilege level. This includes modifying system configurations, accessing private user data, or triggering administrative functions if the victim possesses higher-level credentials.\nThe exploitation process does not require the attacker to have pre-existing authentication or elevated privileges, provided they can successfully socially engineer a victim into clicking the malicious link. The impact of this vulnerability is significant, as it violates the integrity of the user's interaction with the AEM environment and can lead to complete account compromise. The malicious script may also manipulate the rendered DOM to perform phishing attacks or redirect the user to a malicious site, effectively masking the malicious activity from the user."
