Narrative and Response
Description
A flaw was found in distributed-workloads. A remote attacker could exploit a vulnerability in the pull_request_target workflow by submitting a specially crafted pull request. This workflow processes untrusted code from the pull request author while operating with the base repository's sensitive secrets, such as the SNYK_TOKEN, and its default write token. Consequently, an attacker could exfiltrate these secrets, leading to unauthorized access to the Snyk integration and potential control over the repository.

"executiveSummary": "A critical security vulnerability exists in the distributed-workloads project due to the insecure implementation of the pull_request_target GitHub Actions workflow. This flaw allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to manipulate the workflow execution by submitting a specially crafted pull request.\nThe vulnerability stems from the workflow's reliance on the pull_request_target trigger, which grants the execution environment access to the repository's sensitive secrets, including the SNYK_TOKEN, and high-privilege write tokens. Because the workflow processes untrusted code provided by the pull request author, an attacker can inject malicious commands to exfiltrate these secrets.\nThe impact of this vulnerability is severe, potentially resulting in unauthorized access to the Snyk integration associated with the repository. Furthermore, the compromise of the default write token allows an attacker to escalate privileges, potentially gaining full administrative control over the repository. This represents a significant supply chain risk, as external contributions can be weaponized to harvest credentials and compromise the project's integrity.\nExploitation requires no prior authentication or elevated privileges, as any contributor capable of opening a pull request can trigger the malicious workflow execution. The lack of proper sandboxing or input validation within the workflow environment makes this an easily weaponizable vector for remote attackers.",
"technicalDetails": "The root cause of this vulnerability lies in the utilization of the pull_request_target event trigger within the GitHub Actions workflow configuration. Unlike the standard pull_request event, pull_request_target executes in the context of the base branch of the repository, granting it access to the repository's environment secrets and a write-scoped GITHUB_TOKEN.\nIn the distributed-workloads repository, this workflow is configured to process or interact with code provided by pull request authors. When a pull request is submitted, the workflow runs the attacker-controlled code within the repository's CI/CD runner. Because the workflow context has access to the SNYK_TOKEN and default write permissions, the attacker can use these secrets to authenticate to external Snyk services or modify the repository contents.\nThe attack flow follows a sequential path: First, the attacker creates a malicious pull request containing a crafted payload. Second, the GitHub Actions runner automatically triggers the pull_request_target workflow due to the pull request event. Third, because the workflow executes the untrusted code from the pull request, the attacker's payload executes within the protected environment.\nDuring execution, the malicious script can access environmental variables where sensitive tokens are stored. The attacker can then issue network requests to exfiltrate the SNYK_TOKEN to an external, attacker-controlled server. Additionally, by utilizing the GITHUB_TOKEN, the attacker can leverage the GitHub API to perform unauthorized operations, such as pushing commits, bypassing branch protection rules, or modifying further workflow files to establish persistent access.\nThis vulnerability is highly effective because it abuses legitimate platform features designed for automation. The workflow environment fails to isolate untrusted code from sensitive repository secrets, effectively turning a CI/CD automation tool into an exfiltration vector. The absence of strict input validation or the enforcement of secure coding practices when handling external inputs ensures that the malicious payload can interact directly with the repository's secrets store. Post-exploitation, the attacker gains the ability to manipulate Snyk project configurations, gain visibility into proprietary security scanning reports, and potentially leverage the write permissions to inject malicious code into the upstream project, creating a persistent compromise of the distributed-workloads ecosystem."
