Narrative and Response

Description

IBM API Connect 12.1.0.0 through 12.1.1.2 could allow a remote attacker to obtain sensitive information and modify API configurations due to improper authentication. Identity information supplied in requests is not sufficiently verified, which could allow a caller to impersonate another user.

"executiveSummary": "IBM API Connect versions 12.1.0.0 through 12.1.1.2 are susceptible to a critical authentication vulnerability arising from improper verification of identity information.\nThis flaw allows remote, unauthenticated attackers to bypass security controls by impersonating legitimate users or administrative entities.\nThe vulnerability directly impacts the integrity and confidentiality of the API management environment, enabling unauthorized access to sensitive information and unauthorized modification of API configurations.\nThe risk is categorized as high, as it grants attackers the ability to manipulate core service operations and potentially compromise downstream systems integrated through the API Connect gateway.\nExploitation requires network connectivity to the affected product and the ability to craft requests with manipulated identity headers or tokens that the system fails to validate against established trust anchors.",
"technicalDetails": "The vulnerability resides within the identity verification logic of IBM API Connect versions 12.1.0.0 through 12.1.1.2. The root cause is improper authentication handling, specifically the failure to adequately validate the provenance and integrity of identity information provided within incoming requests.\nIn a secure implementation, the API gateway should perform rigorous validation of credentials, security tokens, or identity assertions against a backend identity provider or a local directory service. In this instance, the vulnerable component fails to enforce strict verification, allowing the system to accept user context supplied by the requestor without cryptographic proof or secondary lookup.\nThe attack flow initiates with a remote attacker identifying the API Connect endpoint exposed to the network. By observing the expected structure of legitimate API requests, the attacker can manipulate the fields responsible for conveying identity information, such as specific headers or claims within an authentication token. Because the system does not sufficiently verify these fields, it processes the request as if it originated from an authorized user or an elevated administrative account.\nBy successfully injecting a fraudulent identity, the attacker achieves post-exploitation capabilities including the unauthorized retrieval of sensitive configuration data, sensitive environment variables, or secret keys managed within the API Connect environment. Furthermore, the attacker gains the ability to modify existing API configurations, which could lead to the redirection of traffic, unauthorized access to backend services, or the injection of malicious policies into the API lifecycle management flow.\nThis vulnerability is essentially an identity spoofing attack that negates the primary security objective of the API gateway. Because the system treats the spoofed identity as legitimate, the request bypasses the authorization checks that would otherwise govern access to management functions. The exploitation does not necessarily require advanced malware; it relies on the logical failure of the application to treat identity as an unauthenticated input until strictly validated. The network exposure is broad, as the vulnerability affects the management or gateway interfaces reachable by any remote actor capable of crafting appropriately formed HTTP requests."
