Narrative and Response
Description
IBM API Connect 10.0.8.0 through 10.0.8.12 and 12.1.0.0 through 12.1.1.2 could allow an authenticated attacker to view, add, modify, or delete information in the back-end database due to SQL injection. Input is not properly neutralized before it is used in database queries.

"executiveSummary": "This vulnerability involves an SQL injection flaw identified in IBM API Connect, affecting versions 10.0.8.0 through 10.0.8.12 and 12.1.0.0 through 12.1.1.2.\nThe issue arises from the failure to properly neutralize user-supplied input before incorporating it into back-end database queries.\nSuccessful exploitation allows an authenticated attacker to perform unauthorized database operations, including viewing, adding, modifying, or deleting sensitive information.\nThe vulnerability poses a severe risk to data integrity and confidentiality within the API management environment.\nAttackers require authenticated access to the system to initiate the exploit, though once established, the lack of input validation grants the attacker significant control over the back-end database architecture.",
"technicalDetails": "The core vulnerability is a classic SQL injection (SQLi) flaw stemming from the insufficient sanitization of input data handled by the application's database interaction layer. In the affected versions of IBM API Connect, specific input parameters or fields are processed by the back-end infrastructure without being passed through necessary neutralization routines or parameterized queries. This allows an attacker to inject arbitrary SQL commands into the query stream.\nThe attack flow begins with an authenticated attacker interacting with an API endpoint that interfaces with the underlying database. By supplying crafted, malicious payloads containing SQL syntax (such as UNION, OR 1=1, or stacked queries) within parameters that are expected to be sanitized, the attacker manipulates the logic of the dynamic SQL statement being executed.\nBecause the database engine interprets the malicious payload as legitimate code, the attacker can break out of the intended query context. This unauthorized execution capability allows for a broad range of malicious activities, including bypassing authentication checks, exfiltrating records from tables, modifying administrative entries, or executing destructive commands like DROP or DELETE on database objects.\nThe vulnerability resides in the application's input processing logic, which fails to enforce strict type checking or parameterized query patterns across the identified range of 10.0.8.0-10.0.8.12 and 12.1.0.0-12.1.1.2. The lack of neutralization essentially elevates the privilege level of the authenticated user to that of the database service account, enabling wide-reaching impact on the persistence and accessibility of the data stored within the IBM API Connect environment.\nPost-exploitation, the impact is significant; an attacker can gain complete control over the information contained within the back-end database, leading to potential data breaches, unauthorized data manipulation, or complete corruption of existing records, thereby undermining the security posture of the entire API management ecosystem."
