Narrative and Response

Description

IBM API Connect 10.0.8.0 through 10.0.8.12 and 12.1.0.0 through 12.1.1.2 could allow a remote authenticated attacker to bypass authentication across tenants due to improper authentication. Authentication checks are not sufficiently isolated between tenants, which could allow a user from one tenant to be accepted by another.

"executiveSummary": "A critical improper authentication vulnerability exists in IBM API Connect, affecting versions 10.0.8.0 through 10.0.8.12 and 12.1.0.0 through 12.1.1.2.\nThe vulnerability manifests as an authentication bypass mechanism allowing for cross-tenant unauthorized access.\nA remote authenticated attacker can exploit the insufficient isolation of authentication checks between distinct tenant boundaries to gain access to unauthorized environments.\nSuccessful exploitation permits an attacker to circumvent tenant-specific access controls, effectively allowing a user authenticated in one tenant to be validated and accepted within the context of a separate, target tenant.\nThe impact includes potential unauthorized data access, cross-tenant resource manipulation, and the compromise of logical environment segmentation.\nThis vulnerability requires the attacker to already possess authenticated access to the platform; however, it removes the security barrier typically enforced by multi-tenancy isolation.",
"technicalDetails": "The root cause of this vulnerability lies in the improper implementation of authentication validation logic within IBM API Connect, where security tokens or credentials are not strictly bound to the originating tenant context.\nIn a secure multi-tenant architecture, the authentication service must enforce a strict mapping between the validated user principal and their assigned tenant scope. The vulnerable implementation fails to adequately verify that the authentication claims presented by the client match the security domain of the target tenant resource.\nThe attack flow begins with a remote, authenticated user identifying an endpoint within a foreign tenant to which they should not have access. Because the backend authentication checks are not sufficiently isolated, the system fails to perform a cross-check between the authenticated user's session identifier and the intended target tenant's security boundary.\nWhen a request is submitted to the target tenant, the application service performs a validation step that is susceptible to identity confusion or context leakage. An attacker can manipulate request headers or session parameters to facilitate the acceptance of their current, legitimate authentication token within the unauthorized tenant environment.\nThe exploitation method relies on the failure of the authentication middleware to enforce tenant-specific scoping during the session validation process. By failing to validate the tenant ID against the authenticated session context, the system effectively treats an authentication assertion from one tenant as valid for any other tenant on the same instance.\nThe vulnerable components are the core authentication and authorization middleware modules that manage cross-tenant traffic handling. This exposure allows a user to transcend their restricted operational boundary, leading to unauthorized access to APIs, configurations, and data governed by another tenant.\nPost-exploitation impact is severe, as the attacker effectively bypasses the multi-tenancy trust model. An attacker could potentially gain administrative or operational visibility into foreign environments, bypass access control lists (ACLs), or perform actions that should be restricted strictly to the administrative scope of the targeted tenant.\nBecause the system validates the authentication state without verifying the tenant-binding, the exploit remains highly effective for remote authenticated actors who are properly provisioned within their own valid, but distinct, tenant instance."
